Behind the Lit Windows - The One You Don’t Know - Part 4
Night settled gently over the building, wrapping each window in its quiet glow.
Somewhere between loneliness and habit, people reached for the same thing—connection.
Not always in person.
Sometimes… through a screen.
Sana sat cross-legged on the floor, her laptop open again.
The hunger had dulled, replaced by something else now—anticipation.
A message blinked on her screen.
“You there?”
She smiled.
Not the kind she forced during the day.
This one came easily.
She typed back.
“Always.”
Across the building, in the dim light of his living room, Arun leaned back in his chair.
For the first time that day, the weight on his chest felt… lighter.
He stared at the chat window, rereading her last message.
He didn’t know her name.
Not really.
Not her real one.
She was just “Noor_27” to him.
And he… was just “AruWrites.”
No faces.
No past.
No expectations.
Just words.
And somehow… those words had become the most honest part of his life.
“Rough day?” she typed.
Arun exhaled slowly before replying.
“Yeah… felt like everything slipped out of my hands.”
There was a pause.
Then—
“You’re still holding on. That counts.”
He read it twice.
Something about the way she understood… without asking too many questions… made him stay.
Made him return.
Every single night.
Sana hugged her knees closer as she waited for his reply.
She didn’t know why his words mattered so much.
Maybe because he listened.
Or maybe because, with him, she didn’t have to pretend she was okay.
She typed again.
“Did you eat?”
A simple question.
But it carried care.
Arun smiled faintly.
No one had asked him that today.
Not really.
“Not yet.”
He hesitated.
Then added—
“You?”
Sana looked at the message.
Her fingers hovered over the keyboard.
She glanced at her empty kitchen.
Then typed—
“Yeah.”
A small lie.
But softer this time.
At that very moment, separated by just a few floors and a few walls…
they both stood up.
Arun walked toward his balcony, needing air.
Sana stepped closer to her window, pulling the curtain aside.
And there it was again—
That almost moment.
From across the building, their eyes aligned for a second.
Not long enough to recognize.
Not close enough to know.
Just silhouettes in golden light.
Strangers.
Arun looked away first, distracted by the notification sound.
Sana followed a second later, her attention pulled back to the screen.
Neither realized—
They had just seen the person who understood them the most.
Back in the chat, the conversation continued.
“What would you do if everything fell apart?” Arun asked.
Sana thought for a moment.
Then typed slowly—
“I’d rebuild. Even if it’s alone.”
He smiled.
“You wouldn’t be alone.”
Her heart paused at that line.
A strange warmth spread through her chest.
In a building full of people…
two souls had found each other.
Not through doors.
Not through names.
But through words.
Through honesty.
Through unseen understanding.
They didn’t know each other.
But they were already becoming something real.
And somewhere between silence and typing…
love had quietly begun.
