Everyone Else Got the Manual - The First Instruction - Part 4

I didn’t pick the book up immediately.

I just stood there…

Staring at it on the floor like it might breathe.

My name.

It wrote my name.

Not printed. Not pre-written.

It appeared.

That wasn’t possible.

And yet—

There it was.

The office lights flickered once.

Soft. Quick.

Like a blink.

I swallowed.

Forced myself to move.

“Pick it up,” I whispered.

Not sure if I was telling myself…

Or if something else already had.

My hands felt colder than usual as I bent down.

The book was exactly where I dropped it.

Silent. Still.

Like nothing had happened.

I hesitated.

Then picked it up again.

This time—

It felt heavier.

I didn’t open it right away.

I listened first.

Nothing.

No footsteps. No voices.

Just the faint hum of the AC.

I opened the cover slowly.

The words were still there.

“Assigned User: [My Name]”

Seeing it again didn’t make it easier.

It made it worse.

More real.

My fingers moved to the next page.

I paused.

A strange fear settled in my chest.

Not the kind that makes you run.

The kind that makes you… read anyway.

I turned the page.

This time—

It wasn’t blank.

There was text.

Clear.

Sharp.

Like it had always been there.

“Day 1 — Orientation”

My throat went dry.

Below it—

A single line.

“Observe. Do not react.”

I blinked.

Read it again.

That was it.

No explanation.

No context.

No instructions manual for the manual.

Just a command.

I let out a small, nervous laugh.

“Okay…” I whispered.

“Very funny.”

But the sound didn’t comfort me.

It echoed.

Too loud for an empty office.

I closed the book quickly.

Like shutting it would undo everything.

It didn’t.

The words were already in my head.

Observe. Do not react.

I stood there, frozen between two choices.

Ignore it.

Or follow it.

A normal person would ignore it.

Right?

Call it stress. Imagination. Burnout.

But then—

A thought slipped in.

What if everyone else didn’t ignore it?

What if this—

This strange, impossible thing—

Was exactly what they had been following all along?

Suddenly…

Their confidence made sense.

Their timing.

Their perfect responses.

It wasn’t natural.

It was… guided.

I looked around the office.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Everything felt different now.

Not because it had changed.

But because I had.

I walked back to my desk.

Sat down.

Placed the book in front of me.

My heart was still racing.

But beneath it…

Something else was growing.

Curiosity.

I opened the book again.

The same page.

The same instruction.

“Observe. Do not react.”

I exhaled slowly.

“Fine,” I said quietly.

“If this is real…”

“I’ll follow it.”

The moment the words left my mouth—

The lights flickered again.

Longer this time.

And somewhere—

Not loud.

Not clear.

But close enough—

I thought I heard something.

A whisper.

“…good.”

I froze.

Because I wasn’t alone anymore.
