Arjun could not answer Meenu.
Her tiny fingers clutched his shirt tightly while the creature towered before them, dripping black water across the corridor floor.
“Will you leave me too?”
The question shattered something inside him.
“No,” he whispered immediately.
Never.
The creature laughed again.
Faces twisted across its body like trapped souls trying to escape.
“Fathers always lie.”
Behind it, the staircase slowly collapsed under rising floodwater.
The house was dying.
Ammini stepped forward calmly despite the monster looming over her.
“This ends tonight.”
The creature’s shifting faces suddenly froze.
For the first time, it looked uncertain.
Madhavi stared at Ammini in horror.
“No… don’t.”
Arjun looked between them desperately.
“What are you hiding now?”
Ammini turned toward Meenu.
Such sadness filled her eyes that Devika instinctively held the child closer.
Then Ammini spoke softly.
“She was never chosen randomly.”
Silence.
Only the sound of black water flooding the house below.
Arjun’s heartbeat slowed painfully.
“What does that mean?”
Ammini looked directly at him.
“Because Meenu carries my blood.”
The world stopped.
Devika shook her head instantly.
“No.”
But Arjun remembered.
The strange connection.
The lullabies.
The spirit recognizing Meenu instantly.
Meenu’s ability to see everything.
Ammini continued quietly.
“My son never truly died during the floods.”
The creature growled deeply now.
Angry.
Ammini ignored it.
“The villagers found him days later… alive.”
Arjun felt dizzy.
“He grew up… had children…”
Her eyes slowly filled with tears.
“And eventually… your wife was born.”
Devika froze completely.
“No…”
Madhavi closed her eyes painfully.
“She’s telling the truth.”
Devika stepped backward like the floor itself had betrayed her.
“You mean… this thing wants Meenu because…”
Ammini nodded once.
“She belongs to the bloodline promised to the water.”
The creature moved violently.
The walls cracked around it.
“Return… what was promised…”
Meenu started crying loudly now.
“I don’t want to go in water…”
Arjun held her tightly against his chest.
“You’re not going anywhere.”
But deep inside…
He already understood the terrible truth.
The entity would never stop hunting her.
Not while the blood promise remained alive.
Ammini slowly walked toward the creature.
Blue flames flickered around her feet.
“When I begged for my child long ago,” she whispered, “I offered myself in return.”
The monster screamed.
A sound so loud the windows shattered outward.
“You stayed alive instead,” Madhavi whispered in realization.
Ammini smiled sadly.
“The water refused to let me die.”
The flood inside the house suddenly stopped rising.
The creature stared at Ammini now with pure hatred.
Arjun realized something horrifying.
It feared losing her.
Ammini turned toward him one final time.
“Take Meenu to the eastern prayer room before the house sinks.”
“What are you going to do?” Arjun asked.
Ammini looked toward the endless black water outside.
“I am going home.”
