We Never Even Exchanged Names - The Return Without Reason - Part 2

Aarav told himself it was just convenience.

The bookstore was quiet.
Close enough after work.
Better than going straight home.

That was reason enough.

Or at least, that’s what he chose to believe.

It had been three days.

Three normal, uneventful days filled with work, calls, half-finished thoughts, and long commutes.

Nothing unusual.

Nothing memorable.

And yet…

On the fourth evening, his steps slowed as he reached the mall entrance.

He didn’t stop.

Didn’t think too much.

Just… turned.

The bookstore looked exactly the same.

Same soft lighting.
Same quiet corners.
Same unbothered silence.

Nothing had changed.

And still… it felt like something might.

He walked in.

Not looking around immediately.

Not searching.

Just walking the way he had the first time.

Calm. Uninterested. Casual.

But awareness is a strange thing.

Once it begins… it doesn’t stop easily.

He reached for a book.

Opened it.

Looked at the words without reading them.

And then—

Without meaning to—

His eyes shifted.

She was there.

Different section this time.

Closer to the window.

Leaning slightly against the shelf, flipping through another book the same way she had before.

Not reading.

Just… present.

For a moment, nothing moved.

Not really.

The world didn’t pause.

The music didn’t stop.

People still walked in and out.

But something inside him… recognized the moment.

Not surprise.

Not excitement.

Something quieter.

Like finding a misplaced thought exactly where you left it.

He looked away.

Not immediately.

But soon enough to keep it normal.

This time, he didn’t question it.

Didn’t wonder why she was there.

Didn’t wonder why he was.

Some questions don’t need answers when they feel… obvious.

Minutes passed.

Or maybe longer.

Time had already started doing that thing again—slowing down without permission.

At one point, she moved.

Walked past him.

Close enough for him to notice the faint scent of something—not perfume exactly, just something light, unintentional.

He didn’t turn.

But he noticed.

She stopped near the section he was standing in.

Not right next to him.

Not far either.

A book slipped slightly from the shelf as she pulled another out.

Reflexively, Aarav reached out and steadied it.

Their hands didn’t touch.

But they came close enough to be aware of the distance.

“Thanks,” she said.

Simple.

Natural.

Like it wasn’t the first word between them—but just the first one spoken.

He nodded.

“Yeah.”

That was it.

No follow-up.

No attempt to continue.

Just a moment acknowledged… and allowed to pass.

And strangely, it didn’t feel incomplete.

Later, near the billing counter, the same silent pattern repeated.

She stood ahead this time.

Holding a book.

Actually buying one.

The cashier smiled. “Nice choice.”

She returned a small smile.

Aarav glanced at the cover.

Didn’t read the title fully.

Didn’t need to.

When it was his turn, he placed his book down.

The same one he had picked randomly.

“Card or cash?” the cashier asked.

“Card.”

As he stepped aside, she was still there—adjusting her bag.

For a brief second, their eyes met.

Not long enough to mean anything.

Not short enough to ignore.

And then, like before—

They walked out.

Together.

But not really.

At the exit, their paths split.

No hesitation.

No looking back.

But this time… it felt different.

Because it had happened twice.

And once is coincidence.

Twice… is something else.

That night, Aarav didn’t think too much about it.

Didn’t analyze.

Didn’t question.

But when he closed his eyes…

The bookstore didn’t come to mind.

The books didn’t.

The silence didn’t.

She did.

Not clearly.

Not completely.

But enough.

And somewhere, without saying it out loud—even to himself—

He knew.

He would go back again.
