Where the Sunrise Waited - The Trail That Tests Everyone - Part 6
The next morning arrived faster than anyone expected.
The sky was still half asleep, painted in soft shades of blue and pale orange.
A thin layer of mist covered the town again, as if the mountains were not ready to reveal their secrets yet.
Kabir stood near the town square, looking deeply offended.
“I just want to say,” he announced, “this friendship is toxic. No one told me adventure means waking up before the sun.”
Dev yawned.
“You signed up for it.”
“I didn’t read the terms and conditions,” Kabir replied seriously.
Riya burst out laughing.
A few steps away, Aarav arrived quietly, adjusting his backpack.
He looked more prepared today.
More focused.
As if today actually meant something.
Moments later, Meera and her friends walked in.
She tied her hair into a loose braid, her expression calm but observant.
For a brief second, her eyes met Aarav’s again.
And just like before…
Both looked away.
Kabir leaned toward Riya and whispered,
“Episode 6 and still no dialogue between main characters. This is a slow-burn tragedy.”
Riya bit her lip to stop laughing.
Dev muttered, “You are the tragedy.”
Just then, Raghav appeared.
Right on time.
“Good,” he said. “You all came.”
Kabir folded his hands dramatically.
“Sir, I came against my will, but I am here.”
Raghav ignored him.
“We leave now,” he said, turning toward the northern trail.
The group began walking.
The path was narrower than yesterday.
Steeper.
More quiet.
Tall trees surrounded them, and the sounds of the town slowly disappeared behind.
At first, they walked as two separate groups again.
Aarav and Kabir ahead.
Meera, Riya, and Dev behind.
But today… the distance between them was smaller.
The trail forced it.
At one point, Kabir suddenly slowed down.
Aarav looked at him.
“Why are you walking like a tired turtle?”
Kabir pointed ahead.
“There is a stone that looks like my future.”
Everyone looked.
It was just a normal rock.
Dev said, “Flat and going nowhere?”
Riya laughed out loud.
Kabir placed a hand on his heart.
“Betrayal from all sides.”
The trail became more uneven as they climbed higher.
Loose stones shifted under their feet.
At one point, Meera slipped slightly.
Not enough to fall.
But enough to lose balance.
She steadied herself quickly.
No one made a big deal out of it.
Except Kabir.
“Okay,” he said loudly, “if anyone falls, I just want it on record that I tried to warn you all about gravity.”
Dev responded instantly.
“Gravity is not the problem. You are.”
Riya laughed again.
Even Meera smiled faintly.
Aarav noticed.
But said nothing.
A few minutes later, something unexpected happened.
Kabir suddenly stopped walking.
Everyone behind him bumped slightly.
“What now?” Aarav asked.
Kabir pointed ahead dramatically.
“There are two paths.”
Raghav turned back calmly.
“Yes.”
Kabir narrowed his eyes.
“Which one is safe?”
Raghav smiled slightly.
“The one you choose carefully.”
Kabir stepped back.
“That is the least helpful answer in human history.”
Dev walked past him.
“Move.”
Raghav continued,
“The left path is shorter but steeper. The right one is longer but easier.”
Kabir immediately chose.
“Right path. I respect my life.”
Riya said, “Same.”
Dev nodded.
Aarav didn’t argue.
Meera followed quietly.
As they walked along the longer path, the forest grew denser.
Sunlight filtered through leaves in golden streaks.
The air felt cooler.
And quieter.
Too quiet.
Kabir suddenly whispered,
“Why does it feel like something is watching us?”
Dev didn’t even look at him.
“Because you watch too many movies.”
Riya added,
“If something is watching us, it’s probably judging your life choices.”
Kabir sighed.
“Even unknown forest creatures don’t respect me.”
A soft breeze passed through the trees.
Leaves rustled gently.
And for a brief moment…
Meera felt something strange.
Not fear.
Not danger.
Just a quiet, unexplainable feeling.
As if this place was familiar.
She slowed down slightly.
Her eyes scanning the path.
Aarav, walking ahead, also paused for a second.
He turned slightly.
Not fully.
Just enough to glance back.
Their eyes met again.
This time… a second longer.
Still no words.
But something had shifted.
Kabir noticed immediately.
He whispered loudly to Riya,
“Progress. Eye contact increased by 2 seconds.”
Dev shook his head.
“I’m walking alone from now on.”
The trail continued deeper into the forest.
And somewhere ahead…
The sound of faint flowing water began to echo.
The hidden waterfall was close.
And with it…
Something none of them were ready for.
