The Pattern of Silence - The Confrontation - Part 11

 The man did not resist.

That was the first thing Aarav noticed.

No struggle.
No panic.
No denial.

He sat across the table, hands resting loosely.

As if he had been expecting this moment.

Inspector Arvind Rao stood opposite him.

Silent.

Waiting.

Aarav remained near the wall.

Observing.

“Name,” Arvind said.

The man looked up.

A faint smile.

“Does it matter?”

Arvind’s jaw tightened. “It does to the law.”

A pause.

“Dr. Kiran Malhotra,” he replied calmly.

That landed heavily.

“Doctor?” Jadhav whispered.

Aarav didn’t react.

But something clicked.

“Field?” Arvind asked.

“Applied Chemistry,” Kiran said.
“Specializing in aerosol behavior.”

Silence.

Everything aligned.

Arvind leaned forward. “You understand why you’re here.”

Kiran nodded slightly.

“Yes.”

“No lawyer?” Arvind asked.

Kiran smiled.

“Not yet.”

That confidence was unsettling.

Aarav stepped forward.

Finally speaking.

“You knew we would be there.”

Kiran turned his gaze toward him.

Interested.

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

No denial.

“Why?” Arvind snapped.

Kiran leaned back slightly.

“Because the pattern had been understood.”

Silence.

Aarav’s voice remained calm.

“You changed the environment. The bus. That was intentional.”

Kiran nodded.

“A necessary variation.”

“To test limitations?” Aarav asked.

A flicker of approval crossed Kiran’s face.

“Yes.”

Jadhav felt a chill.

“You’re admitting this?” he asked.

Kiran looked at him.

Almost amused.

“There’s no point denying intelligence.”

Arvind slammed his hand on the table.

“Three people are dead!”

For the first time—

Kiran’s expression changed.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Mild irritation.

“They were variables,” he said.

The room froze.

Arvind stepped forward.

“You don’t even see them as people?”

Kiran’s answer was immediate.

“No.”

Silence.

Aarav spoke again.

“You wanted to prove something.”

Kiran’s eyes shifted back to him.

Focused now.

“Yes.”

“What?” Arvind demanded.

Kiran leaned forward slightly.

Voice lower.

“That a perfect crime… is not about hiding.”

A pause.

“It’s about not being noticed at all.”

The words settled heavily.

Aarav nodded slowly.

“And repetition was your proof.”

Kiran smiled faintly.

“Exactly.”

Jadhav shook his head.

“This is madness.”

Kiran tilted his head.

“No.”

A pause.

“This is precision.”

Silence again.

Arvind took a breath.

“The device. Where is it from?”

Kiran didn’t answer.

Aarav stepped in.

“You designed it.”

Kiran looked at him.

And for the first time—

There was respect.

“Yes.”

“How?” Aarav asked.

Kiran leaned back.

“That’s the interesting part, isn’t it?”

A pause.

“Because you already know.”

Aarav didn’t respond.

But his eyes said—

Almost.

Arvind frowned. “What game are you playing?”

Kiran’s smile returned.

“No game.”

A pause.

“A demonstration.”

Silence.

“Of what?” Arvind asked.

Kiran’s voice dropped.

“That even when you understand everything…”

A pause.

“…you are still one step behind.”

That struck hard.

Because it was true.

They had caught him.

But not before three deaths.

Aarav stepped closer.

“No,” he said quietly.

Kiran looked at him.

Aarav’s voice was steady now.

“We’re exactly where you wanted us.”

Silence.

For the first time—

Kiran didn’t smile.

Because that meant—

Aarav had seen something deeper.

Something beyond the murders.

Aarav continued.

“You didn’t get caught by mistake.”

A pause.

“You let this happen.”

The room went still.

Arvind turned sharply. “What are you saying?”

Aarav didn’t take his eyes off Kiran.

“He needed us to see the pattern.”

Silence.

“Because the pattern… isn’t complete yet.”

That changed everything.

All eyes on Kiran.

And slowly—

Very slowly—

He smiled again.

The arrest was not the end.
It was part of the design.
