The Pattern of Silence - The Trap - Part 10

Knowing the method was not enough.

They needed to predict the moment.

Aarav stood before the board again.

But this time—he wasn’t adding.

He was removing.

“No more past victims,” he said.

Arvind frowned. “What?”

“We stop chasing what already happened.”

A pause.

“We move to what will happen.”

Silence.

Jadhav spoke carefully. “You think we can predict the next one?”

Aarav nodded.

“Yes.”

He circled the three core elements again:

ROUTINE
ISOLATION
TIMING

“Find people who match all three,” he said.

Arvind exhaled. “That’s half the city at 5 a.m.”

Aarav smiled faintly.

“Not exactly.”

He added one more layer.

CONSISTENCY

“Same place. Same time. Same behavior. Every day.”

Jadhav’s eyes widened slightly.

“People who don’t change patterns…”

“…are easy to study,” Aarav finished.

Now it was clear.

They weren’t looking for victims.

They were looking for predictable systems.

🎯 The Plan

By evening, they had a shortlist.

Not names.

Patterns.

  • A man who jogged the same route in Shivaji Park daily
  • A woman who waited at the same bus stop every morning
  • An elderly man who read newspapers on the same bench

Arvind looked uneasy.

“We’re using them as bait.”

Aarav didn’t soften it.

“Yes.”

Silence.

Jadhav spoke quietly. “What if we’re wrong?”

Aarav looked at him.

“Then nothing happens.”

A pause.

“But if we’re right… he will come.”

Because that’s what systems do.

They repeat.

👁️ The Setup

Plainclothes officers were deployed.

No uniforms.

No visible presence.

Just watchers.

Blending in.

Arvind himself took position near the tea stall.

Newspaper in hand.

Eyes everywhere.

Jadhav stood at a distance.

Pretending to be on a call.

And Aarav—

Sat on a bench.

Still.

Quiet.

Waiting.

Time moved slowly.

5:05 a.m.

Nothing.

5:17 a.m.

A jogger passed.

Same rhythm. Same route.

5:29 a.m.

A woman stood at the bus stop.

Checking her watch.

5:41 a.m.

The city began to wake.

Arvind exhaled slowly.

“Maybe today isn’t—”

“Don’t,” Aarav said softly.

Silence again.

Then—

At 5:43 a.m.

A man walked into the frame.

Nothing unusual.

Average height.

Simple clothes.

Calm face.

He didn’t rush.

Didn’t hesitate.

He walked past the jogger.

Paused slightly.

Then continued.

Aarav’s eyes followed him.

Not his face.

His hands.

The man adjusted something.

Small.

Almost invisible.

Near his wrist.

Aarav stood up.

Slowly.

“Arvind,” he said quietly.

Arvind didn’t move.

But his grip tightened.

“Target?” he whispered.

Aarav didn’t answer immediately.

Because something felt…

off.

The man wasn’t approaching the jogger.

He was walking past him.

Toward—

The elderly man on the bench.

Newspaper open.

Unaware.

Aarav’s eyes sharpened.

“Now,” he said.

Everything moved at once.

Arvind dropped the newspaper.

Jadhav rushed forward.

Two officers closed in from the sides.

The man turned.

Not startled.

Not afraid.

Just… aware.

For a split second—

His eyes met Aarav’s.

And in that moment—

There was no panic.

Only calculation.

Then—

He smiled.

And pressed something.

A faint mist released.

“STOP!” Arvind shouted.

Too late.

The elderly man coughed slightly.

Aarav moved instantly.

Pulling him away.

Covering his face.

“Window! Airflow!” Aarav shouted.

The officers tackled the suspect.

Device falling from his hand.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Sharp.

Seconds passed.

The elderly man…

was still breathing.

Alive.

Aarav looked at him.

Then at the suspect.

And understood.

“This wasn’t the real attempt,” he said quietly.

Arvind froze.

“What?”

Aarav’s voice dropped.

“He knew.”

Silence.

“He knew we were watching.”

All eyes turned to the man on the ground.

Still calm.

Still composed.

Still… smiling.

The trap had been set.
But not just by them.
