Whispers Beneath the Backwaters - The Boy in the Flood - Part 24
The creature froze inside Arjun’s arms.
No struggle.
No roar.
Only silence beneath the endless black water.
The drowned boy trembled like a lost child finally remembering what warmth felt like.
Above them, the underwater ruins began cracking apart slowly.
The curse was weakening.
“You were alone for too long,” Arjun whispered.
The child stared at him with wide dark eyes.
Then the faces trapped within the surrounding water slowly appeared.
Children.
Mothers.
Villagers.
Not screaming anymore.
Watching quietly.
The drowned boy’s body began changing.
The monstrous darkness melted away little by little, revealing what remained beneath centuries of grief.
Just a child.
Small.
Terrified.
Abandoned.
“I was cold,” he whispered.
Arjun closed his eyes painfully.
No anger remained inside him now.
Only sadness.
“You don’t have to stay here anymore.”
The child looked upward toward the distant surface.
“Will they leave too?”
Around them, the trapped spirits slowly gathered.
Ammini’s lost son.
The missing village children.
Women who had drowned in despair.
Even Narayanan appeared far away in darkness, reaching upward helplessly.
Arjun realized the truth.
The creature had never truly trapped them.
Their grief had.
The drowned boy slowly touched Arjun’s face.
“No father came for me.”
Arjun’s voice broke.
“I’m here now.”
The underwater world trembled violently.
Then light appeared for the first time beneath the backwaters.
Warm golden light.
Breaking through the darkness above.
The spirits slowly turned toward it.
One by one, the trapped faces began fading peacefully.
Children holding hands.
Mothers carrying babies.
Tears dissolved into light.
Far away, Narayanan screamed as shadows dragged him deeper into darkness.
Not all souls were ready to leave.
The drowned boy looked frightened again.
“If I go… the house will fall.”
Arjun smiled faintly.
“Then let it fall.”
Above them came a thunderous cracking sound.
The Menon tharavadu was collapsing.
The curse was ending.
The child slowly wrapped his arms around Arjun tightly.
Then his body dissolved into warm light.
The black water around them turned clear instantly.
The endless darkness vanished.
And for the first time in centuries…
The backwaters became silent.
Above the surface, dawn finally arrived over Kerala.
