Whispers Beneath the Backwaters - The Eastern Room - Part 20

 “No!” Devika cried.

But Ammini had already begun walking toward the staircase.

Toward the creature.

Toward the rising black flood.

Blue flames danced around her white saree as the spirits of drowned children gathered silently behind her.

The monster’s countless faces twisted violently.

“YOU BELONG TO THE WATER!”

Ammini smiled faintly.

“I belonged to grief. You only fed on it.”

The creature lunged.

The entire house shook.

But before Arjun could see what happened, Madhavi grabbed his arm hard.

“Go!”

The ghostly mother pointed down the corridor.

“Eastern prayer room. Now!”

Another crash echoed below.

Wood splintered.

The creature roared with fury.

Arjun carried Meenu while Devika and Kuttappan followed through the flooding corridor. Water reached their ankles now.

The house seemed endless again.

Corridors stretching unnaturally long.

Doors appearing where none existed before.

And everywhere—

Whispers.

Children whispering from the walls.

“Run…”

“Hurry…”

“She’s stopping it…”

Meenu suddenly pointed toward an old wooden door at the far end.

“There.”

The eastern prayer room.

Arjun kicked the swollen door open.

Inside, the room felt… different.

Warm.

Still untouched by floodwater.

Oil lamps burned steadily before ancient deities covered in sandal paste and flowers.

For the first time that night, the house felt peaceful.

Madhavi appeared near the doorway behind them.

Her form flickered weaker now.

“The room was blessed long ago to keep the water spirits away.”

Outside, a monstrous scream shook the entire mansion.

Devika whispered shakily—

“What is Ammini doing?”

Madhavi looked toward the ceiling sadly.

“She’s giving it what it was denied.”

Then the walls began bleeding again.

Dark water leaked from the prayer room ceiling despite the blessing.

The creature was breaking through.

Meenu suddenly stepped away from Arjun.

Toward the old brass lamp in the center.

“Mole, don’t!” Devika cried.

But Meenu knelt quietly before the flame.

Then she spoke words no child should know.

Ancient Malayalam prayers.

Forgotten.

Old enough to make even Madhavi stare in shock.

The lamp’s flame turned blue instantly.

Outside the room, the whispers stopped.

Silence spread across the house.

Then came Ammini’s voice from somewhere below.

Not weak.

Powerful.

Ancient.

“I RELEASE THE PROMISE.”

The entire mansion trembled violently.

The black water outside began roaring like an ocean storm.

The creature screamed in fury.

And suddenly Meenu opened her eyes.

They were completely black.

She slowly looked toward Arjun.

Then spoke in another voice.

Not her own.

A voice older than the house itself.

“The debt is unpaid.”
