Whispers Beneath the Backwaters - The Unpaid Debt - Part 21

 Devika pulled Meenu back instantly.

“Don’t touch her!”

But Meenu did not react.

The child remained kneeling before the blue flame, eyes black as deep water.

“The debt is unpaid.”

Her voice echoed unnaturally inside the prayer room.

Not loud.

Yet it seemed to come from beneath the floor… from the walls… from the water surrounding the house.

Arjun’s hands trembled.

“Meenu… look at Achaa.”

Slowly, the little girl turned toward him.

For one terrible moment, he saw no child in her eyes.

Only darkness.

Ancient.

Hungry.

Then Meenu smiled sadly.

“A father’s promise was broken.”

Outside, the house screamed.

Not metaphorically.

The wooden beams groaned like an animal dying while floodwater crashed violently through the corridors.

Madhavi looked horrified.

“It’s speaking through her now.”

The blue flame rose higher suddenly.

Images began moving inside it.

Arjun stared helplessly as scenes formed within the fire.

The old village.

Decades earlier.

Heavy monsoon floods.

Villagers gathered near the backwaters carrying torches.

And chained beside the water—

A woman.

Young Ammini.

Human.

Terrified.

Arjun watched in disbelief.

“They tried to kill her…”

Madhavi nodded weakly.

“The villagers believed she caused the flood.”

In the flame, Narayanan’s father stepped forward holding a crying child.

Ammini’s son.

The villagers shouted prayers.

Demanding sacrifice.

The water behind them churned violently.

Then the impossible happened.

The backwaters opened.

Something enormous moved beneath them.

The villagers panicked.

Ammini screamed for her child.

But Narayanan’s father threw the boy into the black water.

Devika covered her mouth in horror.

“No…”

The flame darkened further.

Arjun saw Ammini collapse screaming at the shore while the creature beneath the water rose partially upward.

Not fully visible.

Only eyes.

Huge.

Watching.

Then came the bargain.

A voice from the water.

Ancient.

“For one child… a bloodline forever.”

The flame vanished instantly.

Silence returned.

Only Meenu’s possessed voice remained.

“The first promise was never completed.”

Arjun slowly understood.

“The water was supposed to take Ammini too…”

Madhavi nodded.

“But she survived.”

Outside, the creature roared again.

The prayer room doors cracked violently inward.

Water seeped beneath them.

Meenu stood slowly now.

Still possessed.

“The debt remained hungry.”

Devika cried openly.

“What does it want now?!”

Meenu looked directly at Arjun.

And answered softly—

“The blood of the father who refuses to surrender his child.”

The room fell silent.

Arjun understood immediately.

Not Meenu.

Him.

The creature wanted him instead.
